IOE Engineering Entrance Examination Guide: Syllabus and CBT Tips
The Institute of Engineering (IOE) entrance examination is the gateway to BE and BArch engineering studies at Pulchowk Campus, Thapathali, WRC Pokhara, ERC Dharan, and Chitwan Engineering Campus.

1. Computer-based test (CBT) format and weighting
The IOE entrance is conducted as an automated computer-based test (CBT) at the ICT Center, Pulchowk Campus. The examination comprises 140 marks across 100 questions to be solved in 2 hours (120 minutes).
The examination employs differential marking: 60 questions carry 1 mark each, and 40 questions carry 2 marks each. A 10% negative marking penalty is applied for incorrect answers (-0.1 for 1-mark items, -0.2 for 2-mark items).
- Mathematics: 50 marks (22 one-mark questions + 14 two-mark questions)
- Physics: 45 marks (25 one-mark questions + 10 two-mark questions)
- Chemistry: 25 marks (15 one-mark questions + 5 two-mark questions)
- English: 20 marks (20 one-mark questions)
2. High-weight engineering mathematics tactics
Mathematics accounts for 35.7% of the total score. Focus heavily on differential and integral calculus, vector algebra, 3D coordinate geometry, conic sections, and matrices.
Master shortcut techniques such as L’Hôpital’s rule for indeterminate limits, properties of definite integrals, and standard curve sketching to shave minutes off calculation-heavy problems.
3. CBT interface navigation and pacing
The IOE digital interface allows candidates to mark questions for review, skip questions, and review a visual color-coded palette indicating answered, unanswered, and flagged questions.
Execute a two-pass strategy: on Pass 1, answer all rapid 1-mark conceptual questions across English, Chemistry, and Physics. On Pass 2, dedicate focused time to complex 2-mark calculus and mechanics calculations.
4. Campus selection and rank thresholds
Securing regular (subsidized) seats in popular disciplines such as Computer, Civil, and Electronics at Pulchowk Campus typically requires a merit rank within the top 300 to 500 candidates.
Full-fee seats at constituent campuses extend to around rank 2,000–3,000, while affiliated engineering colleges accommodate qualified candidates within rank 5,000–7,000.
