Nepal Driving License Written Exam Guide: Traffic Signs and DoTM Questions
The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) written exam evaluates your understanding of traffic regulations, road safety, and basic vehicle mechanics before you qualify for the practical driving trial.

1. DoTM written examination format and pass criteria
The written examination for Category A (Motorcycle) and Category K (Scooter/Moped) is selected from the official 500-question question bank published by the Department of Transport Management.
The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions carrying 5 marks each (total 100 marks). Candidates must achieve at least 60 marks (12 correct answers) to pass and proceed to the practical trial.
2. Traffic sign categories and road markings
Traffic signs are divided into three legal classes: Mandatory/Regulatory (circular with red border, must be obeyed), Cautionary/Warning (triangular with red border, alert to hazards), and Informatory (rectangular with blue/green background, guide services).
Road markings carry strict legal meaning: a continuous solid line means overtaking and lane crossing are prohibited. A broken line indicates overtaking is permitted when oncoming traffic is clear.
3. Safe driving practices and vehicle technical knowledge
Questions regularly test right-of-way rules at roundabouts and un-signaled intersections: vehicles already inside a roundabout have priority over approaching vehicles.
Basic technical checks include verifying tyre tread depth and pressure, inspecting engine oil levels, checking front and rear brake fluid, and testing indicators and brake lights prior to riding.
4. Practical trial tips for two-wheelers
Candidates who pass the written exam proceed to the practical trial consisting of the figure-8 turn, narrow balance plank, traffic light simulation, speed breaker, and uphill stop-and-start.
Maintain smooth throttle control on the figure-8 without touching feet to the ground, keep indicator lights activated in the proper direction, and use both front and rear brakes progressively during the uphill stop.
